Former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres has declared that the coronavirus “may be good for climate” since it may cause a global recession and thus lower emissions. Figures, who was a key figure crafting the 2015 UN Paris climate pact, also warned that the world should expect more disease outbreaks “if we continue to deny, delude and delay on climate change.” Figueres appeared on the UK’s Channel 4 on March 2, with host Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Full Ch. 4 video interview of Figueres here.
Channel 4’s Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked Figueres: “Is there any sense that this could be self-controlling — that as we see economic growth possibly slowing down around the world, because of coronavirus — that’s actually good for the climate?”
Christiana Figueres replied: “Well, that is, ironically, of course, the other side of this — right? It may be good for climate. But I think — because there is less trade, there’s less travel, there’s less commerce.”
This is not the first time that Figueres has called for controlling economic growth. See: Flashback: UN climate chief Christiana Figueres seeks ‘centralized transformation’ that is ‘going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different’ – “The Industrial Revolution was also a transformation, but it wasn’t a guided transformation from a centralized policy perspective. This is a centralized transformation that is taking place because governments have decided that they need to listen to science. So it’s a very, very different transformation and one that is going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different.”

Figueres also praised China for its government structure. UN climate chief Christiana Figueres lamented U.S. democracy as ‘very detrimental’ – Sought ‘centralized transformation’ – Lauded one-party ruled China for ‘doing it right’ on climate
Many other climate campaigners have also called for reduced economic growth to fight “global warming.” See: Warmist Prof. Alice Bows-Larkin calls for ‘planned recessions’ to fight ‘global warming’: ‘Economic growth needs to be exchanged’ for ‘planned austerity’ – ‘Whole system change’

Figueres also used the coronavirus as an opportunity to plug the UN’s campaign to reduce and stop meat-eating around the world. “If we continue to eat animals, we will actually be poisoning ourselves and being the genesis new diseases that we have not seen before,” Figueres explained. [See: ‘Food Police’ –UN Meat report: UN seeks ‘massive expansion of the UN’s regulatory power…lifestyle controls’]
Figueres has also advocated that meat-eaters should be banished, treated ‘the same way that smokers are treated”
Channel 4 TV interview excerpts of Figueres: “But you know one thing that I think is actually very positive could be very positive is that if we really sustained several months of reduced travel, we may realize that we don’t have to travel as much. And I am sure in the market will jump into the opportunity, even perfect even more technologies so that we can communicate and participate in meetings, almost as though we were physically present. That would be a systemic contribution to climate change. What is not helpful is just a help that would be here for a few months but then we jump back to bad traditions. So you know can this have actually behavioral change impact, maybe, and let us hope.”
Figueres added: “We will actually have a much broader range of diseases that already exist now and we will have new diseases that erupt. we better be ready for that. Or we better be ready to prevent it. Warmer temperatures will make many vector-borne diseases that are currently restricted to warm areas. There will be more warm areas as the planet warms and hence diseases like malaria and dengue will actually spread. and increase their range. If we continue to eat animals, we will actually be poisoning ourselves and being the genesis new diseases that we have not seen before.

Oops. Which is it?
2016 Claim: ‘Warmer climate could lower dengue risk’
2015 Claim: ‘Dengue Outbreaks Increase with Climate Change’
The mountain of failed predictions and significant flip-flops seems to be never-ending when it comes to climate change experts.
For years they predicted (i.e. carelessly speculated) that a warming climate would increase the incidence of the nasty dengue fever disease. (See: Flashback 2011: NYT : ‘In a single article, NYT blames CO2 for allergies, Lyme disease, malaria, dengue fever, extreme weather, asthma, trauma, depression, high blood pressure, & heart disease’)
But now researchers are reporting that the incidence of the disease (and Zika as well) could actually be reduced with warming climate change. (Someone had better tell the AP and Al Gore! See: Associated Press’ Seth Borenstein Links Zika outbreak to global warming – Al Gore Aproves & NYT: ‘Global Warming’ Could Be Causing Malformed Babies In Brazil)
“While climate change generally poses a major threat to humanity, it also may reduce the incidence of dengue in some areas,” said Dr Harley, an epidemiology researcher at the ANU Research School of Population Health. … The findings are also relevant to other mosquito-borne viruses including Zika because the mosquitoes that carry dengue also transmit the Zika virus. … “There is significant concern in countries on the margin of the tropical areas where dengue is mainly found, that with global warming dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika will encroach and become common,” Dr Harley said. … “Previous projections have suggested that climate change will increase transmission of mosquito-borne diseases globally. … “Our work, using a mathematical model based on Queensland conditions, suggests that dengue transmission might decrease with greater warming.”
Naturally, this is good news that all global warming alarmists should embrace, with the exception of a single caveat regarding the study that should give pause. This latest flip-flop was based on a computer model, which is quite simply, nothing but simulated research using limited empirical evidence. Previous failed-prediction and peer-reviewed articles.
