Excerpt: The climate is always changing; despite the erroneous claims of alarmists, almost no one denies that reality. But the idea that modern climate change is a catastrophic event has not been borne out by the facts, and its salience among voters has collapsed as a result. Now, ardent anti-capitalists who once made climate a focus of their agenda are giving the game away by abandoning the cause.
The starkest example of this about-face came in a recent New York Times op-ed under the headline “Forget Climate Change. Democrats Need to Talk About Other Issues.” (After that headline garnered negative attention on social media, it was changed to “Democrats Don’t Have to Campaign on Climate Change Anymore.”) The piece wasn’t written by some billionaire seeking to steer the Democrats away from regulations that could hurt his bottom line. The author was Matthew T. Huber, a professional academic who wrote the 2022 book “Climate Change as Class War: Building Socialism on a Warming Planet.”
As the title of his book suggests, Mr. Huber is honest about his goals. Throughout his New York Times piece, he discusses the issue of climate change largely along the lines of optics and political jockeying, not The Science™ or supposed existential threats to humanity. Although he says his proposed shift does not necessitate “an abandonment of climate goals,” he notes that Democrats must “regain credibility with working people by tackling their more immediate, material concerns,” that polls show most Americans aren’t worried about climate change, and that “voters who already prioritize climate action are firmly in the Democratic camp and highly educated and affluent.”
The goal, in other words, is still to move the country to the left by electing Democrats. But climate fear-mongering isn’t cutting it anymore. (Notably, Greta Thunberg, the young activist who rose to international fame as a preeminent climate alarmist, now seems to spend most of her time spreading Hamas propaganda and calling European immigration policies racist.)
…
It’s good that left-wing activists and politicians are toning down their climate catastrophizing, even if it’s just a strategic retreat from a failed tactic. But maybe more people on the political right should fill the void left by anti-capitalist climate alarmism with a healthy dose of pro-market climate optimism.
