The COP in Paris was the 21st conference on climate, thus COP21. On the 9th of November, the 31st conference kicks-off in Antalya – COP31.

COP is an acronym for ‘Conference of the Parties‘. It is the supreme decision-making body of an international convention. These conferences are organised by the UN with the high-level participation of states, regional organisations and non-governmental actors.

COP Climate

The best-known COP is the one on climate, which takes place every year in a different region of the world.

The COP in France in 2015 gave birth to the Paris Agreement on climate change. The agreement’s goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. Since then, the UN has confirmed that the world will miss this target, and is projected to reach 1.8°C at a minimum. The priority now is to keep the exceedance short-lived and low, and work toward bringing temperatures back down thereafter.

Framed as the ‘COP of the Future’, negotiations will be on issues such as adapting to climate impacts, reducing greenhouse gas pollution, climate finance for developing countries, and a just transition for workers and communities.
