NYT Times features map maker upset they can’t control the climate: It’s ‘a scary feeling that there’s something happening THAT WE CAN’T CONTROL’
Jürg Gilgen of Switzerland’s national mapping agency, the Federal Office of Topography, or Swisstopo:
New York Times: "The team keeps busy with the extra assignments generated by the melting glaciers, which make better use of their skills than the routine edits. That this professional opportunity is the byproduct of extraordinary environmental degradation is not lost on them. Gilgen enjoys the work while also worrying about its implications. Now and then, he feels particularly anxious when deleting the ice. 'It’s sometimes frightening when you see such changes,' he said. 'I get a scary feeling that there’s something happening that we can’t control.'”
