Unelected bureaucrats target the ‘crisis’ of ‘pedestrian deaths’ on roads – First ever federal rule to ‘rein in excessively large trucks & SUVs’ by mandating ‘permanent’ changes to ‘shape of a vehicle’ – Regs ‘could save up to 67 lives every year’
The Verge – Sept 10, 2024: This week, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stunned safety advocates by proposing new vehicle rules that it says will help reduce pedestrian deaths in America. The new rules appear aimed directly at the trend of increasingly massive SUVs and trucks, which have been shown to be more deadly to pedestrians than smaller and midsize vehicles.
Never in its 50-plus years in existence has the regulator issued new rules for automakers requiring them to change their vehicle designs to better prevent pedestrian fatalities. If enacted, the new rules could change how vehicles are designed in the US — permanently.
The rules announced this week would update the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), the government’s bible for everything that’s required in a new vehicle before it’s sold — from steering wheels to rearview mirrors — to set testing procedures to simulate head-to-hood impact, with the aim of reducing head injuries. If enacted, automakers will have to test their vehicles using crash test dummies representing adult and child pedestrians for the first time. NHTSA says the changes could save up to 67 lives every year. …
The proposed rules come amid a deadly period for pedestrians in this country. Each year, cars kill roughly 40,000 Americans. But while automakers have become very good at protecting people inside of vehicles, they have essentially neglected the safety of people outside of them. …
Meanwhile, pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed in recent years. Between 2013 and 2022, pedestrian fatalities increased 57 percent, from 4,779 to 7,522, NHTSA reports. In 2022, 88 percent of pedestrian deaths occurred in single-vehicle crashes. …
The shape of a vehicle, especially the hood, also plays a critical role in determining whether a pedestrian can survive being struck. Vehicles with hood heights of more than 40 inches and blunt front ends angled at greater than 65 degrees were 44 percent more likely to cause fatalities, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. …
The new NHTSA proposal is an important step, but it’s just the first of many needed to turn this crisis around.
LA Times: ‘To fix climate anxiety (and also climate change), we first have to fix individualism’ – Feels ‘like we’re just counting down the days to our own extinction’

Rosanna Xia – La Times How do you cope? I feel the sorrow, the quiet plea for guidance every time someone asks me this question. As an environmental reporter dedicated to helping people make sense of climate change, I know I should have answers. But the truth is, it took me until now to face my own grief. …With each new heat record shattered, and each new report declaring a code red for humanity, I can’t help but feel like we’re just counting down the days to our own extinction. …
How can they feel hopeful about the future, they asked, when, on top of everything already stacked against them, they also have to worry about wildfires, extreme heat and air pollution getting out of control?
‘Climate Anxiety and the Kid Question’ asks: With American society feeling more socially and politically polarized than ever, is it right to bring another person into the world?
When talking about climate anxiety, it’s important to differentiate whether you’re assessing these emotions as a mental health condition, or as a cultural phenomenon. Let’s start with mental health: Polls show climate anxiety is on the rise and that people all around the world are losing sleep over climate change. Organizations like the Climate-Aware Therapist Directory and the American Psychiatric Assn. have put together an increasing number of guides and resources to help more people understand how climate change has affected our emotional well-being.
But you can’t treat climate anxiety like other forms of anxiety, and here’s where the cultural politics come in: The only way to make climate anxiety go away is to make climate change go away, and given the fraught and deeply systemic underpinnings of climate change, we must also consider this context when it comes to our climate emotions.
“Climate anxiety can’t be limited to just a clinical setting — we have to take it out of the therapy room and look at it through a lens of privilege, and power, and the economic, historical and social structures that are at the root of the problem,” said Sarah Jaquette Ray, whose book “A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety” is a call to arms to think more expansively about our despair. “Treating a person’s climate anxiety without challenging these systems only addresses the symptoms, not the causes… and if white or more privileged emotions get the most airtime, and if we don’t see how climate is intersecting with all these other problems, that can result in a greater silencing of the people most impacted.”
The trick to fixing climate anxiety is to fix individualism, she said. Start small, tap into what you’re already good at, join something bigger than yourself. … And by fixing individualism, as many young activists like Patel have already figured out, we just might have a better shot at fixing climate change.

Spiked Online: ‘The elitism of electric cars’: ‘EVs are still only viable for the well-off, urban-dwelling, laptop class’ – This is hardly a ‘movement… powered by people’
Hugo Griffiths: No invention has done more to liberate society than the mass-produced car. It has become as democratized as such a complex piece of machinery can be. … Electric cars upend much of this, bringing greater expense and requiring a host of well-documented sacrifices from drivers. Unsurprisingly, most are unwilling to make the switch. This issue has become so pronounced that manufacturers are now restricting sales of petrol and diesel models to avoid the gargantuan government fines (£15,000 per car over quota) that will be imposed on brands if they don’t shift enough EVs. Such threats wouldn’t be needed if the product were in demand. …
All this pro-EV legislation has been drawn up by people who tend to be isolated from the population at large. … EV advocates often blame poor sales of electric cars on ‘misinformation’.
Charging is so stacked against the poor as to be an ideal subject for fans of class analysis. If your home has a driveway (a feature that makes a house more valuable), then an EV can make a great deal of sense. Each morning, you come down to a car conveniently filled with cheap overnight electricity, priced at as little as seven pence per unit and taxed at a liberal five per cent VAT.
Not so the individual who has to park on the street. He must not only pay a commercial rate of perhaps 85 pence per unit of electricity, but is also hit with 20 per cent VAT. This means that while filling an EV at home can be as cheap as £3.50, the same amount of electricity going into the same car can easily cost £42.50 on the open road.
Our ideal EV driver has, therefore, a nice job, can work from his phone and has a house with a driveway. This is hardly a ‘movement… powered by people’, as one pro-EV publication was bold enough to call it.
The truth is this: electric cars and their policies favor the fortunate.
