Morano: “Unelected bureaucrats in California are going to now ban inefficient tires, and they’re ‘sheltering us from higher costs’, they assure us. So I marvel sometimes at how much these bureaucrats care about us. I mean, they really went out of their way. They’re thinking 10, 15 years in the future, about how we’re going to be driving, and you have to marvel at that.
This is the California Energy Commission. It voted unanimously, so you think this must be a good idea. There was no dissent. Unelected bureaucrats voted to essentially start banning tires. Now, if you don’t have the proper rolling resistance, what does that cause? Apparently, it causes inefficient wind resistance and inefficient gas mileage. So they’re hoping that by banning these tires, which they deem climate evil, essentially, it’s the equivalent of taking nearly half a million cars off the road.
They don’t have to remove the cars. Now, they’re just going to remove the tires!
So Californians are going to have to cross state lines to buy tires. If you stay within the state, you’ll have 70% less choice, pay a lot more for your tires, and face severe limits on choice. If you’re an off-roader, if you’re in a mountain area of California, and you want snow tires, it’s going to be a lot more difficult if they don’t meet the rolling resistance requirements the way you want a tire.”
