President Donald Trump just took his biggest swing yet at demolishing U.S. climate policy. The courts will decide whether it sticks.
Standing alongside Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, Trump announced the repeal of the agency’s 2009 scientific declaration that greenhouse gases harm human health and welfare. The so-called endangerment finding is the legal basis for federal limits on planet-warming pollution — and by killing it, the Trump administration could block any future president from taking meaningful steps to fight climate change.
It’s hard to overstate how huge this is. Even Trump’s first administration rejected the idea of dumping the endangerment finding, despite pleas from conservative activists.

Environmentalists and Democratic-controlled states will mount a legal challenge that could eventually land at the Supreme Court. The court’s 6-3 conservative supermajority already scaled back EPA’s ability to curb climate pollution in its 2022 West Virginia v. EPA decision.
