Selected Book Excerpts: Via the Randy Olson book: NARRATIVE INDEX (NI) – It captures the power of contradiction in a text by including the word BUT. I’ve labeled it the Narrative Index (NI). It is this: Narrative Index (NI) = (BUTs / ANDs) * 100 The ratio is multiplied by 100 just to make it a whole number. The NI tells us how much “bite” a text has. When a speaker is arguing fiercely and convincingly, the score can soar up into the 30s and even the 40s.
