Rachel Campos-Duffy: Executive editor of ClimateDepot.com, Marc Morano joins us. I can’t before my head explodes. I just want to let our viewers understand what is COP30, this summit, explain it. It sounds very 2012, but it’s happening. Tell us what it is.
Marc Morano: It’s the 30th UN Climate Summit called the Conference of Parties. I attended COP29 in Azerbaijan, and it was an unmitigated disaster as the Trump effect overtook the entire summit. You had Argentina pull their delegation, and one of the speakers said oil is ‘a gift from God’, and then Al Gore and everyone started bickering. There was talk of not having any more UN climate summits. So that’s why COP30 is just another elite global climate summit with private jets. This time in Brazil, this time clear-cutting the rainforest to make it happen.
Campos-Duffy: It’s so crazy because the Indigenous people who lived here actually wanted to use their own land, and they were fighting the environmentalists, right? But now a climate summit is a good reason just to start the clear-cutting?
Marc Morano: This goes back decades now before climate change was the issue du jour, and climate really didn’t become that until the 2000s. In the 80s and 90s, all you had was the rainforest deforestation scare, which was the number one environmental issue. I attended and covered, as a journalist, the musician Sting’s rainforest concert. I actually interviewed Donald Trump there in 1999, the first time I met Donald Trump was just at the celebrity driven rainforest concert.
The rainforest scare was all replaced when Al Gore’s film came out in the UN reports in the 2000s. But essentially, the disappearing rainforest campaign was the number one issue for decades. We were told there was no clear-cutting of the jungles, and we had to preserve every tree; these are the lungs of the Earth, which is important. And then all of a sudden, they’re going to clearcut tens of thousands of Amazon acres for a four-lane highway just for a freaking UN climate Summit!? The president of Brazil says they will use the climate summit to showcase how they’re preserving the Amazon — HOW?! — by clear-cutting it for a stupid climate summit by the United Nations?!
This is beyond parody. If they really cared about the rainforest or the climate, they would have a Zoom conference.
Elon Musk & Tesla boycotts
Rachel Campos-Duffy: Democrats, they used to care about the environment and EV cars, which you and I have talked about incessantly as not being that environmentally friendly anyway, but now they want to make a statement about Elon Musk, and they’re giving away their EV cars, their Teslas because they hate Elon the latest I guess is Sen. Mark Kelly:
Marc Morano: Remember, this was the astronaut who saw climate change from a spaceship, which is impossible, and he used that claim to run for office. Elon Musk is being demonized not just by Senator Kelly but by Cheryl Crow, the Hollywood celebrities, because of his stand for free speech his devotion now to cutting government waste, and his affiliation with Donald Trump. ‘Save the Planet’ unless it helps Trump or Elon Musk! They don’t care about that they’ve turned their advocacy on its head because they don’t like someone. This is emotion taking over, and by the way, you’re not going to save the planet with Teslas anyway. It takes half a million pounds of materials to dig up the Earth to make one average-sized Tesla battery. It’s just as Earth-intensive as fossil fuel-powered — gas cars. But by their logic they should still be supporting Tesla.
Rachel Campos-Duffy: It’s actually worse because those EV cars, uh, make us dependent on China and have child labor involved as well. Um, Mark, uh, Mark Morano, always great to have you on. Thanks so much.
