Watch: At COP29, UN speakers declare war on farmers: ‘Producers of meat & dairy should pay for the damage they cause [to climate]’ – Call for ‘Meat Tax’

Jeroom Remmers at COP29: Producers of Meat and Dairy Should Pay Taxes for the Damage They CauseJeroom Remmers is Director of the ‘True Animal Protein Price Coalition’ based in Amsterdam

REMMERS: “And we also want to give some of the revenues of those taxes to consumers to reduce prices of healthy foods like vegetables, fruits and plant-based meat. And on top of that, if there’s some money left, it’s really important, we should also pay for the loss and damage funds, because when we eat meat and dairy, this is causing like 20% of all greenhouses gas emissions, so it’s damaging a lot of things in the world. Climate change is caused 20% by meat and dairy, so the producers of meat and dairy should pay for the damage they cause. It’s normal, when I damage the window of my neighbor, I have to repair this damage, but meat and dairy processors also have to repair the damage they cause on others and in the future. So, thank you for the question.”

Activist Willem Branten: COP29 Can Only Be Successful if Meat Tax Is Announced (Full Video) Branten is from The True Animal Protein Price Coalition

BRANTEN: “And for one more time, our demands, they are — we believe that COP29 and UNFCCC conferences thereafter can only be successful if the closing statement includes transitioning away from animal protein overconsumption according to national or global dietary guidelines by implementing greenhouse gas emission pricing mechanisms in agri food systems. We urge the EU commission, the OECD and China to lead the way towards these harmonized pricing mechanisms, and we also urge the use of at least 20 percent of their revenues for above mentioned pricing mechanisms to finance the loss and damage fund so that we can we pay for the damages done by our past consumption of meat and animal proteins. This is why we want to make the polluter pay.”

Activist Willem Branten: We Are Going to Tax Farmers and Use that Money to Help Them Produce Vegetables Instead of Meat

‘The risk of backlash and reactionary response to such policies is always a possibility’

BRANTEN: “That coalition as a company lobbies in the European Union to not only use the money by the revenue of greenhouse gas emission pricing, not only use it for the loss and damage fund, but also use it to give a roadmap to farmers themselves to help them with our green transition, and to therefore subsidize ecological farming and consumption of vegetables and greens. I think currently there’s the problem with there not being a clear roadmap, especially in Europe with the switching political climate, and therefore there’s also a lot of uncertainty for farmers in Europe and therefore there are also calls and protests, I’m not sure whether this is also happening in other Global North countries, because I myself am from the Netherlands, but this is what I would like share.”

American Energy Alliance’s Statement on Finalized Biden-Harris Methane Tax
WASHINGTON DC (11/12/2024) – The Biden-Harris administration is poised to finalize a new methane emissions tax for U.S. oil and gas producers today.

The tax, mandated by President Joe Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, was originally outlined but left to the Environmental Protection Agency to finalize. The finalized rule will impose a penalty of $900 per metric ton on methane emissions that exceed a government-set threshold.

AEA President Thomas Pyle issued the following statement in response:

“Reliable and affordable energy is critical for American households, businesses, and manufacturers to thrive. Having decisively lost an election where energy policy was a key issue, the Biden administration is using its final days to impose taxes that will raise energy costs for Americans. Repealing this tax on natural gas should be a top priority for Republican leaders in the new Congress.”
