My speech to the promising new Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) in London
Friends — I am writing to you from London, where I just spoke at the first annual meeting of the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC), a new organization founded by Baroness Philippa Stroud, Jordan Peterson, and Paul Marshall. The idea? “We need a new story.”
The argument I made in the video above is that our new story must be a pro-human one. The fundamental divide isn’t between Left and Right but rather between pro-human and anti-human worldviews.
At the heart of ARC is a commitment to lifting all humans out of poverty while protecting the environment. ARC’s vision is one of abundance, freedom, and flourishing. Sound familiar? To readers of Public and Apocalypse Never, it no doubt does.

By now, almost everyone knows the conventional wisdom: climate change is an existential threat to human civilization; fires, floods, and hurricanes are worsening; the coral on the Great Barrier Reef is dying; we’re in a Sixth Mass Extinction; the only way to really turn things around is with inexpensive renewables, and no longer eating meat; and we don’t need nuclear energy, which is too dangerous.
It’s a powerful story, one that has motivated millions of people to march in the streets and governments to spend $1 trillion annually on green energy. There’s only one problem with it: practically everything about the story is wrong. Here’s a set of facts you won’t read in the New York Times:
