Greenpeace has been placed alongside extremist groups such as neo-Nazis by counter terror police in guidance to officers.
A guide produced by the counterterrorism policing unit lists campaigning environmental groups alongside far-right extremist groups such as Combat 18, National Action and the National Front.
The unit said that the document was only intended to be a helpful guide for officers on the beat to identify various groups during their day-to-day activities, adding that it explicitly states that not all of the groups mentioned are terrorist or even criminal organisations.
Featuring groups such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Peta, the animal rights charity, it was distributed to schools and NHS staff as part of training for the government anti-terror programme, Prevent.
Greenpeace has criticised the document, saying that environmentalists and animal rights campaigners were being lumped in with extremists.
