Actress Anne Hathaway is defending climate change activist Greta Thunberg from what she calls “textbook misogyny” from the Swedish 16-year-old’s critics.

“If you think about the way she is being criticized, it is textbook misogyny, textbook patronizing, it is all these things,” Hathaway told the Evening Standard.

Thunberg last month spoke at the United Nations about climate change concerns, pressing leaders to step up their actions in the face of dire warnings from scientists.

President Trump appeared to mock her for warning of a possible “mass extinction” in her speech:

“I think one of the best things to focus on about her is she speaks from a place of passion and emotion,” Hathaway told the British newspaper. “She is speaking science to power. I admire her and I am glad to see I am not the only one.”

Thunberg, who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize this year, regularly faces threats and misinformation online. When she visited Iowa earlier this month, a teacher joked on Facebook about meeting her with a “sniper rifle.”

Hathaway said her own concerns about the environment stem from the birth of her son.

“When I had my son I started to think about consuming things in a different way,” she told the Standard.
