The bottom line here is that the implied rates of decarbonization that follow from the emissions-reductions commitments of the leading Democratic candidates are incredibly ambitious. On the one hand, transformational policy change does not occur without high ambition. But on the other hand, if the commitments being advanced by the Democrats are to be seen as anything more than “magical solutions,” actual policy proposals to achieve those commitments need to pass a reality test. Right now, no climate target and timetable advanced by a Democratic presidential candidate passes that reality test.
