New paper finds large increases of snowfall on East Antarctica could significantly reduce sea level rise – Published in Geophysical Research Letters
Study finds 'Enhanced snowfall on the East Antarctic ice sheet is projected to significantly mitigate [reduce] 21st century global sea level rise. In recent years (2009 and 2011), regionally extreme snowfall [increases in] East Antarctica have been observed.' The authors find that the large observed increases "could signal the beginning of a long-term increase of snowfall" rather than just natural variability. The authors also find that climate models did not predict this increase during the current climate and only predicted such changes would happen toward the end of the 21st century'
