DURBAN, South Africa - The South African media and government leaders are borrowing a page from medieval witchcraft when it comes to the science of man-made global warming.
South African President Jacob Zuma literally believes that mankind has caused every storm and that regulatory actions of the UN can prevent bad weather.
“We have experienced unusual and severe flooding in coastal areas in recent times, impacting on people directly as they lose their homes, jobs and livelihoods. Given the urgency, states, parties should strive to find solutions here in Durban,” Zuma said according to an article in the South Africa's Independent newspaper on December 4.
Make no mistake, President Zuma is claiming that the UN can somehow “find solutions” to flooding in South Africa. The belief that mankind can control the weather is not new. Act now or 'life as we know it will come to an end'
In a December 4, 2011 article featured in the global warming coverage in South Africa's Independent newspaper, Liz Clarke serves up an article that would make climate astrologers very proud.
Clarke's article, titled “Gloom and doom hang in the air at change at climate talks,” claims that “every leading climate change scientist on the planet” agrees that “if humans don't put the brakes on dirty fossil fuels emissions in the foreseeable future, life as we know it will come to an end.”
Clarke was not content to let that bit of sappy prose stand alone. She added: “Not only are we teetering on the point of no return, say scientists who are the messengers of the apocalyptic scenario, but also the world's polluters are playing Russian roulette with human existence.”
Clarke is of the belief that the UN can control the weather if only nations of the world would allow it to. “If negotiations fail to come up with a cooler deal for the planet, the implications are overwhelming,” she wrote.
Clarke continued: “...mankind is destined to fry like boerewors (sausage) on a braai (barbeque)...it's a scenario, some might say, from hell, but it's the only scenario there is.” Clarke ominously warns that “planet Earth will simply have to watch and wait” to learn its fate.

UK Professor Philip Stott has mocked today's climate fears by comparing such fears to ancient civilizations. “From the Babylon of Gilgamesh to the post-Eden of Noah, every age has viewed climate change cataclysmically, as retribution for human greed and sinfulness,” Stott, an emeritus professor of Biogeography from the University of London wrote.
The UN delegates and the South African media seem to be pushing two key goals from the Durban summit: 1) getting the “Green Climate Fund” operational and fully funded and 2) coming up with a “second term” for the Kyoto Protocol. Chatter in the delegate hall on Monday at Durban's International Convention Center was that they may indeed come up with some sort of extension to Kyoto by the end of this week. There is no care in the air at all for the new devastating revelations of Climategate 2.0.
In another area, sadly, President Zuma is woefully uninformed on basic “green economy” facts. He has not apparently heard of Spain's failure, Europe's or the Solyndra debacle in the U.S.
The South African President is hyping “green jobs” due to the “threat of climate change.” “We have committed ourselves...to work towards an inclusive, green, and sustainable growth,” Zuma said. Zuma is planning on “putting a price on carbon” in order to help grow the economy and “bridge the economic gaps still inherent in South African society.”
