WaPo: America's energy transition hinges on decisions about land use, report says.  There’s an often-overlooked aspect of America’s energy transition: It will require a lot of land. That means decisions about land use could have a profound impact on the speed and scale of the nation’s shift to clean energy, according to an analysis shared first with The Climate 202 by the ICF Climate Center, a climate research group within global consulting firm ICF.

Energy analysis Mark P. Mills: "You have to dig up about 500,000 pounds of materials to make a single 1000-pound battery. It takes 100 to 300 barrels of oil to manufacture a battery that can hold one barrel of oil equivalent of energy."

Mills is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute & a faculty fellow at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering & Applied Science. ... Mills served in the White House Science Office under President Reagan.

No one person can roll back what’s happening in the climate sector, Kerry said, “because private companies have made major bets on the future and they’re not going to reverse them.”

If they will reduce, if they will take the lead, if they will start deploying the new technologies, if they will stop using unabated fossil fuels, we’ll up the chance of winning this battle.”

In a new Monmouth poll, just one percent of working-class (noncollege) voters in an open-ended question identify climate change as the biggest concern facing their family. ...did anyone ask the working class whether they wanted to sign up in the climate change army? ... In a new Gallup poll, just 2 percent of working-class respondents say they currently own an electric vehicle and a mere 9 percent say they are “seriously considering” purchasing one. ...

I just don’t see how you can get the working class to support a clean energy transition unless it becomes more of a crusade for abundant, cheap, reliable energy and less about the cultural commitment of college-educated Democrats to an economy built around wind, solar, and electric vehicles no matter the cost.

Morano: "It is easier to transition your gender than it is your energy, particularly on the energy timescales they're talking about. So if you think it's impossible for a man to have a baby, well, then it's equally impossible to have solar and wind power our entire economy. That's the kind of delusion we're living in right now."

Converting the world to entirely clean energy will require $10 trillion worth of investment, but continuing to rely on fossil fuels would cost about $14 trillion, according to Elon Musk. A massive build-out of solar-panel factories and metal refineries are required over the next 20 years to deliver renewable-power generation and electricity-storage capacity needed to power the global economy entirely with carbon-free energy, Tesla Inc. said in its Master Plan Part 3 published Thursday. The white paper fleshes out the details of Musk’s vision for a world without fossil fuels.

Climate Depot's Morano: "Elon Musk is living in a green energy fantasy utopian vision. Much like 2 weeks to flatten the curve, we are told just $10 trillion to transition our energy to so-called renewables. Perhaps Elon Musk is trying to win back some positive media after advocating for free speech on Twitter and taking hits and all his various business enterprises. The Way Forward is to use technology and cheap reliable energy to build America's economy, not derail our entire Economy based on a fantasy of green energy based on a premise of a climate crisis. Renewables dig the earth. Not in a 1970s Brady Bunch way, but literally dig deep into the Earth for Rare Earth mining. Green energy reliability and prosperity is always just around the corner - - in this case -- a $10 trillion dollar corner."

Robert Bryce analysis: Elon’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Battery Math - Tesla's "Master Plan" for weather-dependent renewables will require 960 years of Gigafactory battery output. - "Gobsmackingly silly" - "Someone at Tesla might think about investing in a calculator."

JP Morgan CEO, Jaime Dimon in his annual letter to shareholders: "The window for action to avert the costliest impacts of global climate change is closing...We need to do more, and we need to do so immediately...Massive global investment in clean energy technologies must be done and must continue to grow year-over-year. At the same time, permitting reforms are desperately needed to allow investment to be done in any kind of timely way. We may even need to evoke eminent domain – we simply are not getting the adequate investments fast enough for grid, solar, wind and pipeline initiatives. Policies like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — that hold the potential to unlock over $1 trillion in clean technology development — need to be implemented effectively...“The need to provide energy affordably and reliably for today, as well as the necessary investments to decarbonize for tomorrow, underscores the inextricable links between economic growth.”

Morano on Energy Dysphoria: "I think it's easier to transition your gender than it is to transition to green energy. There's just no way to put this. This green energy is not green. It's not clean, and it's not cheaper to replace fossil fuels. It requires fossil fuels to make green energy, wind, and solar require more reliance on China, requires rare earth mining, and renewables dig the earth, not in a Brady Bunch 1970s kind of way -- they dig deep into the earth. And what's amazing here is none of Biden's supporters could care less about China, Venezuela, OPEC in the Middle East, exploring their fossil fuels, but they express horror if we do it here in the U.S., suddenly America's evil. They could care less about all these other regimes doing it with lower human rights and lower environmental standards." 

Biden touts 1.5 temperature goal:

Morano: "During the Climategate scandal, when all the emails were released, revealed that top UN scientist Phil Jones said, Where did we even get this number, this temperature of 1.5 or 2 degrees goal from? He said it was likely pulled from thin air with no science behind it." 

Biden claims the weather is getting more extreme:

Morano: "It's completely science free. There are always going to be floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires. That's the history of the Earth. That's completely normal. What's key here is if you look at the peer-reviewed literature and even buried in United Nations climate reports and the National Climate Assessments -- hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, droughts, wildfires are either not increasing, or they are declining on climate timescales of 30, 50, or 100 years."

Robert Bryce: Since 2008, when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an executive order requiring the state’s utilities to obtain a third of the electricity they sell from renewables by 2020, all-sector electricity prices in California have soared by 80%. California residents are now paying the highest electricity prices in the U.S. outside of Hawaii. But here’s the really sobering part: Despite these soaring costs, the state’s headlong rush for renewables has not resulted in a big drop in the state’s electric sector missions. ... California’s surging electricity costs have coincided with increasing renewable energy mandates and the closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in 2012. ... Gov. Newsom declared that the state was taking the “most aggressive action on climate our nation has ever seen...That’s climate action done the California Way -– and we’re not only doubling down, we’re just getting started.” In other words, last year’s 15% increase in electricity prices was just an amuse-bouche. More big rate hikes are on the way.  The punchline here is obvious: California provides a stark warning to the rest of the United States about how NOT to manage an electric grid. Aggressive renewable energy mandates may be politically popular, but they come with exorbitant price tags that punish the poor and provide negligible (if any) cuts in CO₂ emissions.
