An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and a global pandemic for a natural disaster.

Pope Francis said in a new interview published Wednesday that he believes the coronavirus outbreak is “nature’s response” to humans failing to save the ecosystem.

“We did not respond to the partial catastrophes,” the Pope said in an email interview in The Tablet and Commonwealth magazines. “Who now speaks of the fires in Australia, or remembers that 18 months ago a boat could cross the North Pole because the glaciers had all melted? Who speaks now of the floods?”

The 83-year-old papal leader specified that he doesn’t think the pandemic is a “revenge of nature,” but said the outbreak is “certainly nature’s responses.”
