Former UN IPCC chief RK Pachauri passes away at 79 in Delhi

Teri Director General Ajay Mathur said on Friday that former Teri chief RK Pachauri has passed away.

Teri on Twitter wrote, “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing away of Dr RK Pachauri, the Founder Director of TERI. The entire TERI family stands with the family of Dr Pachauri in this hour of grief.”

“Teri is what it is today because of Dr Pachauri’s untiring perseverance. He played a pivotal role in making us a leading organisation in the sustainability space,” Ajay Mathur, Director General, Teri, who succeeded Pachauri in 2015 said.

“Dr Pachauri’s contribution to global sustainable development is unparalleled. His leadership of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC] laid the ground for climate change conversations today,” Nitin Desai, Chairman, Teri, said.

“In this solemn moment, friends and colleagues of Dr Pachauri are invited to share their remembrances, including photos, at [email protected],” Teri tweeted.

Former Teri chief RK Pachauri, who was admitted to the Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi with a prolonged cardiac ailment, was put on life support on Tuesday.

Pachauri (79) underwent an open heart surgery at the hospital, they said.

The environmentalist had suffered a heart stroke in Mexico in July last year, said a source close to him, adding that he was critical and put on ventilator.

“He was suffering from cardiac issues. He had an open heart surgery but was put on ventilator,” the sources said.
