James Cameron On Climate Change: ‘People Need To Wake The F*** Up’ & stop eating meat

Hollywood titan James Cameron has sounded the alarm about the coming environmental disaster if people don’t “wake the f*** up” about climate change and stop eating meat.

According to Variety, Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, have been leading the way on climate change activism by pushing for a meatless future with the company Verdient Foods, while also contributing to Global Green and Oceana organizations.

“People need to wake the f*** up,” Cameron told Variety. “We’re going the wrong direction as fast as possible. I like to say that we’re like Thelma and Louise. We’re driving straight toward the canyon at 90 miles per hour with the radio cranked up and the top down.”

Cameron said he decided to focus his efforts on changing food consumption to manage climate change because it was the most under-served area — unlike renewable energy and transportation.

“We felt that was one of the least well served, least understood, and biggest, most important ways that we could effect change,” he said. “We tried to find something that was less well understood and was a major lever that could effect change. Food is a good one. It’s probably the second-biggest one. Well ahead is transportation. We all drive around in our Teslas and our Priuses and think we are doing a great job, but really we’re all assuaging our liberal guilt. The real solution is: change the way you live.”

Cameron’s wife Suzy said the company Verdient Foods focuses closely on the type of plants it grows to make meat substitutes. She argued that the world is headed toward a meatless future.

“Look at the amazing success of Beyond Meat and the stock market. I mean, it’s not a trend — it’s actually the way the world is going,” she said. “If you look at what the beef industry is investing in and what the dairy industry is investing in: They’re investing in plant-based milk and cheeses and yogurt and meat products.”

The “Titanic” director has long been an advocate for environmental causes, which partially formed the basis for his hit film “Avatar.” In 2017, the director referred to the Trump administration as “insane,” likening the president to the captain of the ill-fated ship Titanic.

“These people are insane,” Cameron said. “Years ago, we sort of spotted the iceberg ahead of us and we called out the order to turn, and we’ve been slowly, slowly, slowly trying to turn this big-a** ship to not hit the iceberg, and then Trump grabbed the tiller and just plunged it right back at the center of the iceberg.”

“So am I worried? Of course. I’m like anyone of good conscience and reasonable intelligence,” he continued. “I think we’re the biggest freakin’ idiot civilization in history right now, and they’ll probably be talking about us 4,000 years from now scratching their heads—like they talk about Atlantis. Who are those guys? What did they do to piss off the gods so much that they’re buried under a hundred feet of mud right now?”
