2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders is being accused of being a hypocrite on climate change after his use of private jets was revealed.

Former members of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign leaked details this week about Sanders (I-Vt.) taking private jets to attend campaign rallies on Clinton’s behalf.

According to Politico, the staffers said that Sanders’ frequent requests for private planes from the campaign became “a running joke in the office” — in part because Sanders has been an outspoken critic of the fossil fuel industry and even pushed for the elimination of carbon-generating heavy aircraft in favor of high-speed rail networks.

In all, Sanders reportedly billed the Clinton-Kaine campaign approximately $100,000 for air travel.

Sanders continued using private jets after the election, spending at least $342,000 on flights in 2017 and 2018, according to the Federal Election Commission,

On “Fox & Friends” Tuesday, Marc Morano, the executive editor of ClimateDepot.com, said it’s “rank hypocrisy” for Sanders to call for the U.S. to do more to fight climate change while “lavishly” using private jets himself.

“Outside of Al Gore, in electoral politics, Bernie was the guy as the number one ‘climate guru’ … and he just can’t keep himself out of these private jets,” Morano said.

He predicted that the public will see through Sanders’ double standard, and it will “have a corrosive effect” on the self-described Democratic socialist’s poll numbers.

Morano added that it’s ironic that it was Clinton campaign staffers who revealed Sanders’ extensive use of private jets.

“They’re eating themselves here. You rarely ever see climate activists on the left pointing fingers and going after each other for hypocrisy,” he said. “Usually it’s climate skeptics and others pointing out the hypocrisy.”
