Speaking on the need for climate action, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says that ‘the problem’ is ‘cheap energy’. Guterres: “The problem is that many of our societies have an addiction to cheap energy. […] That is why we need political leadership.”
UN SECRETARY-GENERAL GUTERRES: “The problem is that many of our societies have an addicted –an addiction to cheap energy. And, it is true that in many countries in electoral campaigns and people do polls and whatever, they are afraid to raise– to reduce subsidies to fuel and things of the sort because of the elections and whatever. That is why we need political leadership. Political leaders, if they only look at the poll,, and they only try to think about the next election and to win the next election, there’s one thing I can guarantee, sooner or later they will lose an election. And, when they lose an election, they will have no legacy behind them.”
