One of the highest profile voices of climate realism in the world today says immigration, healthcare, and taxes are not the only issues on the minds of some voters.
The Trump administration is in the process of formally withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. That process, which began in November, is expected to take a year.
“It turns the 2020 election into a referendum on the U.N. Paris climate pact … as well as the Green New Deal,” says Climate Depot’s Marc Morano, a skeptic of catastrophic man-made climate change. “So if Trump’s re-elected, we’re out of the U.N. Paris [Agreement]. If Trump is not re-elected and a Democrat wins, we are back in.”
President Trump announced on June 1, 2017 that the U.S. would leave the Paris Climate Agreement.
“As president, I can put no other consideration before the wellbeing of American citizens,” President Trump declared. “The Paris Climate Accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries, leaving American workers — who I love — and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered factories, and vastly diminished economic production.”
The president campaigned against the Paris Agreement in 2016.
Candidates for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination all say they are concerned about what they call man-made climate change. They believe Americans need to change how they live, work, and travel in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions they blame for driving up temperatures and causing bigger, more powerful storms. In doing so, Democrat candidates say the U.S. would provide leadership the world needs in helping the environment.
”I think ultimately the voters are going to decide whether the U.S. stays in the Paris climate pact,” Morano submits.
Nicolas Loris and Katie Tubb of The Heritage Foundation, a center-right think tank in Washington, D.C., say Trump was right to pull out of the climate agreement. Experts from The Heritage Foundation have also criticized the Green New Deal. Cost and other economic harms are among the reasons why Heritage is not in favor of the climate action plans.
