Abundance is a problem for deep ecologists because ecologists want to organise society around scarcity. A social order based around scarcity is obedient. Authority subsists in the management of scarcity.
That is why greens often fantasise about the WWII 'war footing'.

In the apocryphal 'war footing', sheer necessity created a kind of social cohesion, in which everyone was united in purpose, nobody demanded anything, everyone gratefully accepted the little that was due to them. It is a misty-eyed, toffee box rendering of grotesque hardships.

Greens fantasise about a crisis as deep, or deeper than WWII, not because there is any plausible or rational basis for claiming that there is a 'climate crisis', but because they want the authority and the power than such a crisis gives to them.

To the extent that it has been coherently formulated (which is not saying much), what is at the core of the deep ecological outlook epitomised by XR is a profound disgust for abundance.
— Ben Pile (@clim8resistance) October 16, 2019
As Clive's graphic shows very clearly, food has never been so abundant. Yet XRs believe that there exists a food security crisis, so we must actively create a food security crisis in order to prevent the food security crisis.
Abundance is anathema to deep ecology…

XR do not believe that they should have to persuade the public in order for their ideas about how society should be organised to prevail. They believe that they can force the government to act, to dismantle democracy, and to enforce ecological austerity on everyone.

You can scream "CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL" at me all day long.
What is far more tangible, measurable, real and dangerous is the ideological impulse at the heart of environmentalism.
They *want* deep austerity. They think deep austerity is a socially-cohesive force. pic.twitter.com/b1UFh3zalf
