Chaos in the Alps – Massive snowfall leaves more than 2,000 people stranded at Chambery airport and shuts roads throughout Savoie Across the Savoie region, thousands of people were trapped in their cars, snowed in their chalets or stranded at airports as long-awaited snow finally dumped on the Alps – several feet, in some places. One man died when his vehicle slid into a ravine in the Isere region. Three others died in other snow-related incidents across France earlier in the week. Local gyms and community halls were opened up as shelters in the Savoy region on Saturday. “The police should have got people to fit chains this morning after half a metre [20 in] of snow fell last night,” said British driver Gavin Rigby, who spent 11 hours drivinf between Val d’Isere and Bourg Saint Maurice – a journey which would normally take 30 minutes. Heavy snow caused disruption to roads in Germany too, causing a 25km (16-mile) traffic jam on the A8 motorway near Stuttgart. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30613481 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/11314946/Chaos-in-the-Alps-as-massive-snowfall-traps-15000-cars.html Thanks to Dean Koehler and Bill Sellers for these links
